February 25, 2023 marks the 99th birthday for Graland’s oldest alumna, Cope McWhinney Craven.
Cope’s father, Leroy McWhinney, served as the first President of the Board of Directors when the school was incorporated in 1927. He sent all seven of his children to Graland, and Cope was in the Class of 1936. I have enjoyed periodically calling Cope, who lives in Poughkeepsie, NY. She has very fond recollections of her early days at Graland and has a remarkable memory. Cope has produced some delightful audiotapes with stories about Miss Nelson and other teachers who influenced her to become a teacher and have a long and successful career. Cope’s sister, Susan, lives in Boston, and her brother Rodney lives in Los Gatos, CA. Cope was excited to share that her granddaughter Eve is in her freshman year at the University of Denver. Our school community sends special birthday wishes to Cope on her 99th birthday!
