Ages 3-5: Play with Purpose

Young children learn best through play!

Graland’s preschool and prekindergarten program is designed to help students settle into the school environment with joy, while intentionally integrating the development of foundational skills in math, literacy and social-emotional awareness.

Early Childhood Learning

Our preschool and prekindergarten children are introduced to our early childhood learning program called Creative Curriculum and explore new subject matters that ignite their curiosity. Teachers work to create and establish routines and reinforce positive interactions between students. Students begin to embrace socialization skills and what it means to understand their own needs while also sharing, building friendships and showing respect for others.

By the end of the prekindergarten year, students are ready to slide into Kindergarten with a smile.

Early Literacy

To ensure Kindergarten readiness, phonetic awareness and literacy covers writing and phonics, subjects that are taught through interactive activities, music and play focused on kid-friendly topics like trees, insects, buildings, recycling and more. Of course, there is lots and lots of storytime every day!

Early Math

Math lessons are hands-on and kinesthetic, allowing students to recognize how numbers connect to their lives. They practice math skills like counting and recognizing patterns using manipulatives. Math is fun!

Other Special Subjects

Weekly visits to the library open a world outside the classroom and foster a love for books. Science encourages our youngest learners to explore the natural world while introducing new vocabulary and processes.

Social-Emotional Learning

Children continue to grow social-emotional skills such as how to label and express feelings, resolve conflicts, be a good friend and show compassion. As they gain an awareness of self and their impact on others, young children participate in service learning and their responsibility to care for others with the Dumb Friends League.

Innovation and Exploration

Young children use their growing minds to tackle design projects in our innovation program. With an introduction to skills like empathy, creative thinking, critical thinking, perseverance, experimentation and collaboration, students have a safe space to stretch their abilities and to learn try again when things don't work out. Guided by our innovation specialists, they learn to say, "How can I make it work?" instead of "I can't do it."

Wiggle, Jump and Play!

PE lessons outside or in our Early Learning Gross Motor Room get the wiggles out and teach developmental skills like jumping, balancing and skipping. Daily recesses are a time for bike riding, slides, swings, sand and water play with friends.

The Arts

Art projects often connect to literacy themes and give children the chance to try a variety of media like paint and 3D objects. While they are exhibiting their artistry, they are also developing important fine motor skills like cutting with scissors and holding a paintbrush. In music and movement class, children’s natural love for songs is used to teach rhythm, tempo and beat through singing, dancing and instruments.

Learning Through Play

Each day in the classroom, children have choices in how they want to play and explore. Imaginative play, puzzles, blocks, art, books and pop up stations are designed to reinforce learning topics like the veterinarian station during pet month and the construction site during their unit on buildings.

Our signature programs give students trips, traditions and service learning opportunities to look forward to and memories to last a lifetime.
