Threads of Connection: Fifth Graders Craft Pillows for Buddies in Math

In Mrs. Dodge's class, fifth graders used their math skills and creativity to design custom pillows for their first-grade buddies. They began by calculating the dimensions of the fabric needed and applying their knowledge of geometry to ensure everything was measured accurately.
Once they had their plans, the fifth graders headed to the Gates Invention and Innovation Lab to bring their designs to life. They measured and cut fabric, sewed the pieces together, and stuffed the pillows to give them just the right shape. To make the gifts even more personal, the fifth graders added their buddies’ names and favorite things to each pillow with fabric markers.

After completing their projects, the fifth graders hand-delivered the pillows to their first-grade buddies and wrapped up the experience with a fun math activity together. This project was part of Graland’s Buddy Program, which pairs older and younger students to build community and friendships. Spanning from Preschool through Grade 8, the Buddy Program encourages connection, collaboration, and support, and this activity was a perfect example of how students at Graland learn and grow together.
