Fourth Graders Explore Disability Awareness at Access Gallery

This February, Grade 4 students had the chance to explore the intersection of art and disability during a new field trip to Access Gallery in Denver's Santa Fe Arts District. Access Gallery is an inclusive nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage with and benefit from the arts.
The students' visit was divided into two parts. First, they spoke with the gallery manager about the artwork on display, learning how artists are accepted into the program, the education and experience they gain, and how the gallery offers a platform for artists with disabilities to earn a living through their talents. The discussion also covered how experienced artists become mentors within the community. This conversation helped the fourth graders gain valuable insights into the business and creative processes behind the gallery.

In the second part of their visit, students had the chance to explore the studio spaces where artists were working. The artists shared their favorite media, their techniques, and their passions, giving students an inside look at the work and artistry involved. This experience deepened the fourth graders' understanding of how the Access Gallery artists express themselves through their craft.

This field trip was an important part of Grade 4's service learning unit on Disability Awareness & Allyship. Throughout the year, students learn to understand and respect both physical and cognitive disabilities through a variety of activities. They explore a different kind of disability each month, engage with guest speakers from all walks of life, and visit additional places and businesses such as DIRT Coffee. This program, which kicks off with the “Creating SPACE,” curriculum, encourages students to build empathy, understand accessibility, and explore the principles of inclusion and allyship.

The visit to Access Gallery offered fourth graders a chance to directly engage with the work of talented local artists, deepening their knowledge of disability and partnership. It was an experience that will continue to shape their understanding as they progress on their journey to becoming lifelong allies.
