Third-Grade Readers Shine in the Newbery Challenge
Graland’s third graders are taking on a beloved literary tradition: the Newbery Challenge. Beginning in January, students are introduced to the program, which encourages them to explore Newbery Honor books across various genres while deepening their love for reading and strengthening their comprehension skills.
The challenge has multiple milestones. After reading five Newbery books, third graders earn a place in the Newbery Club. From there, they work toward an even bigger goal—reading 25 books. After every five books, they meet with parent volunteers for a quick comprehension check. Those who pass receive a small reward and a certificate of membership signed by their teachers.
Each milestone is celebrated with an in-class ceremony, where students proudly share their favorite books while their classmates applaud their achievements. “It’s such an incredible moment, and you can see the pride in each student’s face,” says Grade 3 Teacher Ms. Heather McCormick. “Their classmates cheer them on with loud applause, making it a truly joyful celebration of reading.”
For those who reach the 25-book milestone, the recognition is even greater. These dedicated readers are honored in a special ceremony, where they receive a Newbery book of their choice and have their names added to the Newbery Hall of Fame, displayed on the second floor of the Georgia Nelson Building. While most students complete the challenge by the end of the school year, some continue reading over the summer, earning their spot in the Hall of Fame later.
This cherished tradition continues to be a powerful way to celebrate both individual achievements and a shared enthusiasm for reading. Congratulations to all of our Grade 3 readers!
