Honoring Colorado’s Past: The Grade 3 Monument Project

Third graders recently stepped into the role of historians, researchers, and designers as they embarked on the Grade 3 Monument Project. Tasked with exploring the lives of important historical figures from Colorado’s past, students carefully selected individuals they believed deserved to be remembered.
After diving into research, students created compelling advertisements showcasing their chosen figures' accomplishments and lasting impact. Their colorful posters highlighted why these individuals were significant and why they should be honored. But the project didn’t stop there—students then brought history to life by designing their own creative interpretations of monuments dedicated to their figures.

Once their projects were complete, classrooms transformed into interactive galleries. Students participated in a gallery walk, moving through multiple classrooms to admire their peers' work, learning from each other, and celebrating the diverse contributions of Colorado’s historical figures. The Monument Project was not only an engaging way to connect with history but also an opportunity for students to develop research, creativity, and presentation skills.
