A Battle of Wits: The Grade 5 Athens vs. Sparta Debate

Fifth graders in Mr. Mike Willis' history class recently put their knowledge to the test in a spirited Athens vs. Sparta debate. Divided into two teams, students represented the rival city-states, crafting detailed PowerPoint presentations that explored societal norms, warfare tactics, education systems, and familial beliefs.
With Mr. Willis serving as the moderator, students engaged in a structured debate, taking turns presenting their arguments and responding with well-researched rebuttals. Each team had one-three minutes to make their case, ensuring that all points were backed by fact-checked sources. The exchange was both lively and insightful, as students defended their city-state’s way of life while critically evaluating opposing viewpoints.

The debate was a dynamic way for students to deepen their understanding of Ancient Greece, practice persuasive speaking, and refine their research skills—all while bringing history to life in the classroom.
