ANDREAN ANDRUS: 1982-2020
Full StoryEntering Andrean’s art room one immerses oneself in the sight and sounds of the students hunkered down at their tables working on their sculptures, their Halloween masks, their still- life paintings, their horses for the rodeo, etc. There is an infectious energy and risk-taking in all of her art classes. Everyone in her room believes that he/she is an artist. Morover, her students love Andrean. She is the mistress of smiling support for all, often nudging her students to think more deeply about their work. Also, her room with its colorful clutter suits her, and from time to time ,some of her prized “artifacts” join the lesson for the day.
Soon, Andrean will be packing up her room, maybe even sharing warm stories, for example, of why a rusty typewriter graces the entry to her classroom. Almost forty years of students from ECLC to ninth grade. Thousands of projects to recall. Years of faculty meetings and recess duties. School trips. The Permanent Art Collection. Comments for 150 students or so. Adult classes. After-school art. Interdisciplinary work with colleagues.
I wish one of Colorado’s premier art teachers a joyous retirement. Her studio awaits. Hey, Hallmark Cards, she may want a part-time job. Text me for her phone number. Forgive the cliche, this lady has talent in spades. -
DICK KINNEY: 1987-2020
Full StoryBelieve it or not, I who have aptly described myself as someone who is as athletic as a corpse, loved Red Barber, a sports broadcaster for the Yankees and Dodgers. When he started his weekly segment on NPR with Bob Edwards, I became a fan of the banter between them. Barber once said -- or wrote?-- that baseball was dull only to dull minds. The first time I watched Dick coach our Graland boys on Preisser Field, I thought of Barber. Here was a man who matched Barber’s passion for the game. I often wandered from my classroom not only to support my students but also to watch Dick Kinney in action. This reserved man was not reserved at a baseball game. His energy and his commitment to his players and the sport was infectious. Of course, this spirit dominated Dick’s teaching PE to our students and to his coaching soccer, tennis, and basketball. In the late 80s and early 90s, one of the parents told me I was a Kinney groupie. In addition, Dick taught biology for a few years and to quote one of his students from the class of 1993, “He is the best science teacher I have ever had. I am so lucky to be in his class!” Dick’s students appreciated his passion for biology. I will miss this kind gentleman; I also know he will enjoy his morning sports page and his many books -- what an avid reader! A genuine bookdragon. -

The Story of Graland School

As dictated by students to Graland's founding Headmistress Georgia Nelson on May 17, 1928
Once upon a time there was a school named Graland School. At first, it was a little school, and it grew and grew bigger every year until the mothers and the fathers decided they would have to build a new school in the country so the children would have more room to play and work in and more sunshine, and a big workshop.
So, one day the children went out to break the ground and help dig a hole for this new school. They went out in cars, and when they got there, they saw the steam shovel take up the dirt, and they dug and they dug in the ground, and the hole is getting deeper and deeper.
The children played in the sand and took off their shoes and had their pictures were taken. Then, they came back to the school, and they hope the new school will be for ready for them in the fall.
