Graland’s Oldest Alumna Celebrates 98th Birthday!

Jim Arneill, School Archives Committee
In addition to Presidents’ Day this month, there is another special February birthday - Cope McWhinney Craven, the oldest Graland alumna, turns 98 on February 25. Cope, whose father, Leroy McWhinney, served as the first President of the Board of Directors when the school was incorporated in 1927, sent Cope and her six siblings to Graland starting in the late 1920s.
Cope, who now lives in Poughkeepsie, NY, speaks fondly of her memories of the early days of Graland. She was inspired by Miss Nelson and other teachers, and she became an educator herself. Cope had a long and very fulfilling career teaching third grade through college in both public and independent schools.

Cope’s sister, Susan, lives in Boston, and her brother Rodney lives in Los Gatos, CA. Rodney’s wood-covered 1946 yearbook is part of the Alumni Memorabilia Display in the Corkins Center. The book is opened to the page which lists Rodney and Susan in their seventh grade play.

Our school community sends special birthday wishes to Cope on her 98th birthday!
