History students are researching the people, places, art and architecture of the Renaissance this month but instead of writing a paper about their learning, they are headed to the Digital Media Studio for some creative projects. Each class was tasked with making a video to show their understanding of this pivotal era in history, according to teacher John Caldwell.
“I wanted them to take their research and use it to create something fun and clever,” he says. “They have to work together to synthesize the different topics into one cohesive presentation.”
Different groups are creating a Jeopardy-style game show and virtual tours of Florence, Italy. One is developing ideas for a Renaissance newscast with field reporters interviewing Michelangelo at the Sistine Chapel and other prominent people of the day.
Gigi Kim is role-playing Filippo Brunelleschi, an Italian architect who designed a famous cathedral in Florence called the Duomo. In the news segment, she will talk about Brunelleschi’s life and accomplishments while two of her classmates share about other significant buildings of the Renaissance.
“The nice thing about working with a group is that you never run out of ideas,” Gigi says.
After wrapping up the research phase, students worked on scripts and storyboards. They will continue with filming and editing up until winter break and complete their projects in January. At next week’s academic assembly, they will show a sneak peek of the works in progress. Stay tuned for the final videos!
