Exploring Alma Thomas: A Colorful Journey for First Graders

First graders recently completed an engaging color mixing unit inspired by the renowned artist Alma Thomas. This unit culminated in a memorable field trip to the Denver Art Museum, where they had the chance to see her work from the Smithsonian American Art Museum on display and create their own paintings in her style.
To prepare for their museum visit, students worked with model magic to mix primary colors and develop secondary and tertiary hues while documenting their observations. This exploration set the stage for their upcoming project of producing an Alma Thomas-inspired piece.
The first graders also explored Thomas's life and artwork through a "See, Wonder, Think" activity. They began by sketching one of her paintings, which prompted them to reflect on what they would ask the artist if given the chance. Inspired by Thomas's connection to nature, they were encouraged to find their own sources of inspiration by observing the natural scenery around Graland's campus.

At the museum, the first graders experienced Thomas's work firsthand and engaged in interactive activities related to the exhibit. After their visit, they began creating their individual paintings, using only primary colors and mixing them to develop unique shades. By incorporating Thomas's signature stripes into their designs, students connected their learning with their artistic expression.

This unit not only enhanced the first graders’ understanding of color mixing but also deepened their appreciation for Alma Thomas's art and its connection to nature, inspiring their creative journeys.
