Grade 4 Students Unearth Colorado's Geological Wonders through STEAM Learning

This month, our fourth-grade students embarked on an exciting journey through time as they explored the geological transformations of Earth and Colorado's stunning landscapes in their science class. Guided by their Science Teacher, Ms. Elise de Geus, the students undertook a new unit examining fossil and geological evidence to explain Earth's changes throughout history.
Throughout the unit, the budding scientists were challenged to think like geologists, using patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to understand how landscapes have evolved over millions of years. The students connected these lessons to their home state of Colorado, studying iconic landmarks such as Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Great Sand Dunes, Red Rocks Park, Garden of the Gods, Royal Gorge, and Colorado National Monument.

Incorporating elements of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) into their studies, the fourth-grade scientists delved into various creative projects to showcase their learning throughout the unit. They created watercolor paintings depicting geological eras, molded their own fossils from clay, and designed visual presentations such as posters, comic books, and brochures to highlight the geological history of the eight Colorado landmarks they researched.

By studying Earth's geological transformations and their local connection to Colorado, the students gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the processes that have shaped our world and state. Next year, in Grade 5 science, students will get to build upon what they learned by examining the rock cycle. Way to go, Grade 4 geologists!
