Lessons in Empathy: Sixth Graders Serve and Learn at Local Soup Kitchen

As part of their service-learning project focused on poverty and homelessness, these students have committed themselves to making a difference in the lives of those in need. The partnership between the school and the soup kitchen, which spans decades prior to the pandemic, allows students to engage in face-to-face interactions with the clients. From setting up the facility to serving meals and cleaning up, the students work with the staff to provide a welcoming environment for those seeking a nutritious warm meal and a friendly smile.

As the students serve the clients, they begin to challenge their own perceptions and foster a deeper understanding of the realities of poverty and homelessness. The experience at the soup kitchen provides a valuable opportunity for students to learn about the impact of their actions, no matter how small. 

In addition to the practical skills gained from volunteering, the students also develop essential life skills such as teamwork, compassion, and empathy. By supporting Capitol Hill Community Services and their mission, these sixth graders are growing into thoughtful and engaged citizens, ready to make a positive impact on their community. As the school year progresses, these students will continue to learn and grow through their service at the soup kitchen, cultivating perspectives of the world around them and the power of kindness to effect change.
