Grade 4: Uncovering the Harlem Renaissance

Over the past weeks, the students built their background knowledge on this era, learning essential skills such as note-taking, accessing research materials, asking insightful questions, and crafting informational texts. Each student focused on studying one artist from the Harlem Renaissance, diving deep into their life and legacy. In coming art classes, they will channel their creativity to propose a piece of public art honoring the artist they had studied.

The trip to the Blair Caldwell Museum wasn't just about research; it was about honing valuable skills in research and expository writing. It provided an opportunity for the students to apply their learning in a real-world setting. Each equipped with an artist to research, they engaged with expert librarians, navigating through resources available to them to expand their notes, embracing the role of professional researchers, and immersing themselves in the pursuit of knowledge.

The visit to Five Points, known as the "Harlem of the West," offered a unique perspective. The students drew connections between the artistic revival of Denver in the 1920’s and 30’s with what they had learned about Harlem in the classroom. It was a moment of realization, as they witnessed the resonance of the Harlem Renaissance in their own community. This journey into the Harlem Renaissance serves as a writing unit that enhances students' non-fiction reading, research skills, and expository writing abilities. Through this approach, the students are not only learning about history and art but also developing crucial skills that will serve them well in their academic journey and beyond.
