Students taking the role of backstage crews for the upcoming Grade 7 and 8 musical, "Singin' in the Rain, Jr.," are learning the intricacies of scenic design for the anticipated musical with guidance from their teacher Mrs. Julie Lachance. Having just completed a reading of the script, the students have transitioned into small groups, each tasked with the challenge of designing the set that will become the backdrop for the show.
The primary objective of this project is clear: to craft a practical, usable, and creative scenic design for "Singin' in the Rain, Jr." The students are not only delving into the technical aspects of set design, but are also using the opportunity to utilize the entire stage efficiently. The ultimate goal is to create a dynamic set that facilitates swift and seamless transitions between different locations, all managed by the backstage crew.

In this project, doing thorough research becomes really important. To give them a better understanding of the musical and aesthetics, Mrs. Lachance showed the Grade 7 students the original film. The Students are digging deep into the historical time of the musical, connecting it to their scenic designs. The process involves the development of foundational drafting skills as they work on ground plans and other technical elements of set design. The students are solving a genuine problem: how to bring a captivating and era-appropriate set to life for a live production. The sets they design will undergo a review process, involving collaboration with the show's director, Ms. Phelan. Through revisions and reworking, the students witness the transformation of their ideas into tangible, stage-ready sets.
