Kindergarten Literacy Journey: Unveiling the Magic of Reading
Kat Diez Canseco
Following their morning meeting with Ms. Brezin, Kindergarten students at Graland gathered for the daily Really Great Reading lesson, a vital part of their literacy journey. The recent session was filled with practical activities aimed at nurturing the students' reading skills.
The lesson began with the use of letter tiles, where the young learners identified the first or last letters in CVC words (words created using a consonant, vowel, and a consonant). The classroom buzzed with energy as the children decoded words, taking their first steps in the world of reading.
A key component of the session was the exploration of heart words like "did," "too," and "will”. These foundational words became the focus, helping the students unlock the trick of reading. The main objective was clear – to develop the students' reading abilities. The specific skills highlighted included letter-sound correspondence, quick recognition, reading of heart words, and the gradual shift from CVC words to fluently reading longer phrases.
Reflecting on the impact, it was evident that the students enjoyed the role of “word detectives.” Their excitement and growing confidence were tangible signs of progress. As they tackled missing letters and embraced the challenge of reading, the classroom became a dynamic space where young readers were taking their first steps into the world of words.
