Grade 1 Shines a Light on Chick Development

Excitement is building in Ms. Sarah Jackson’s Lower School Science classroom as first graders begin an in-depth study of chick growth and development. As part of their year-long study on birds, students recently participated in egg candling, a process that uses light to examine fertilized eggs and observe early development. This lesson introduced them to the parts of an egg and sparked conversations about what chicks need to grow and thrive.
In the coming weeks, students will take on the responsibility of observing and caring for the eggs, watching as they develop and eventually hatch into baby chicks. This start-to-finish experience offers meaningful opportunities to witness life cycles up close, make scientific observations, and practice empathy and care for living things.

The bird unit, a signature part of the Grade 1 experience and service learning, weaves together science, art, Spanish, and literacy. Throughout the year, students design inventions to help birds, visit a bird sanctuary, and complete in-depth bird reports that showcase both their research and reflections.

Stay tuned—there’s more egg-citement to come!
