Wellness Teacher
Ms. Metcalfe loves being an advisor and building strong connections with a small group of students. She enjoys providing a safe place where students can be their authentic selves.
Impacting Students
In the lessons on stress management in sixth grade wellness, we look at what stress is, why it is important to manage stress due to the effects on the body, common stressors among students, and healthy ways to cope. We follow this with several different mindfulness/meditation activities that students can easily access and practice right away. A few students commented they tried these techniques on their own and how much it helped. This was so nice to hear knowing how stressed kids can be.
Lifelong Learner
I attended the Learning Lab presented by Oscar Gonzalez and Tara Lavizzo on implicit bias, which happened to be right before my seventh grade lessons on bias language. I was immediately able to incorporate some of the language into my lesson, which definitely helped clarify behaviors for students. It's so nice to know we have so many great experts right on campus.
Why I Love Teaching
Middle School was a tough, lonely four years for me. I wanted to teach this age group because of the teachers who helped me get through Middle School. I want to be that person for others.
