The familiar story of Peter Pan gets a more authentic adaptation next week when fifth graders perform the classic tale for peers, family and friends next week.
“This version is different from the Disney movie,” explains music teacher Josh Gaffga, who directed the show. “It’s more about using your imagination than special effects like flying.”
Thirty-five fifth graders auditioned to be in the cast and have been rehearsing after school since September, putting in a total of about 50 hours. The show includes solo and ensemble music that was directed by drama teacher Anna Phelan.
With help from production manager Dan O’Neill, students are running the show, including set changes and operating a new, upgraded light board. Several students in Grades 7/8 are working as backstage managers to make sure costume changes and entrances go smoothly. Graland also collaborated with staff at the Denver School of the Arts on set design and lighting, with art teacher Andrea Crane and some of the cast pitching in to paint the floor and set pieces.
A fun twist to the show comes courtesy of the Grade 7 film class, who contributed footage that will be used to portray certain aspects of the story. Finally, special thanks to parent volunteers Laura Bonnett-Lohr and Andrea Mahoney for their help with props and costumes, along with costumer Terry Nydegger.
