Grade 2: A Day Back in Time

Second graders learned about life as a child in the late 1800s with a visit to Four Mile Historic Park. Classes took turns doing chores like washing clothes in a washtub, beating rugs, sweeping the walkways and feeding chickens. They soon learned that, without electricity or other modern inventions, chores were much different than today!

"I think it would be kind of fun to be a kid back then because they got to play a lot of scout games out on the land," says Anna Schouten. "Chores would be easier because they didn't have to make beds."

Anna also liked going into the house, where boys and girls were not allowed into each other's bedrooms. "There was no basement in the house," she remembers. "If a tornado came, they went into a place off the kitchen where they put all the pots and pans."

After chores, students headed to the one-room schoolhouse for lessons. They formed two lines, boys and girls, and the teacher examined their fingernails and hands. Those who needed to wash were sent to the pump to clean up. Sitting on wood benches, they performed tasks on chalkboards and learned to say "Ma'am" when addressing the teacher.

Students also played pioneer games like tug-of-war and panned for gold.

"Panning for gold is hard work," says Sam Cheroutes. "First you put the pan in water and scoop up some sand. Then you swish the water around and poke your finger in to look for shiny stuff. If we found gold we got to take two pieces home."

The field trip enhanced their study of Colorado history, a theme in Grade 2 social studies.
