Grade 2: Exploring the Legacy of Margaret "Molly" Brown

Kat Diez Canseco
Under the guidance of their teachers, all Grade 2 students embarked on a journey into the life of Margaret "Molly" Brown. As part of their biography lesson, they learned about this extraordinary woman and uncovered her heroism and impact on society.
Their learning began with a visit to Molly Brown's historic home, where the students walked in her footsteps and experienced firsthand the environment that shaped her life. Surrounded by stories of her past, they gained insight into her life-changing experiences and the challenges she faced - like being on board the Titanic and helping other passengers survive the crash. Back in the classroom, they were engaged in various biographies, including one authored by Mrs. Justine Hall, each offering a unique perspective on Molly's life.

Ms. Carrie VonderHaar and Mrs. Hall shared that the learning objectives were to understand not only Molly's bravery during the Titanic disaster but also her advocacy for women and children. Discussions through guided-tours, where the students learned about Molly’s founding of the Denver Woman’s Club, also aimed to inspire empathy and empowerment among the students.

As spring approaches, the Grade 2 students will have the opportunity to choose their own person of study, thanks to the inspiration provided by Margaret Brown and the mentorship of their teachers. As the students reflect on their exploration of Margaret "Molly" Brown's life, they are reminded of the impact one person can have on the world. Inspired by her legacy, students are taking the lead in creating positive change in their own lives and communities. With the support of their teachers, they are developing the skills and knowledge needed to tackle challenges and make a meaningful impact.
