Reading for the Newbery Club is supplementary to the classroom reading and daily reading instruction. Students are responsible for keeping personal records and they are tested for comprehension on the titles they complete. Once they reach the first milestone, five books, students are recognized as new members of the Newbery Club and they receive an award. Students are then celebrated each time they complete five additional books. In past years, some amazing Graland readers have reached Hall of Fame status after logging more than 25 books!

“One of the most inspiring parts of the program is watching students discover different genres of writing and then share their favorite titles with their peers,” shares teacher Julie Stretz. GO read!

Did you know? The John Newbery Medal has been awarded annually, since 1922, by the American Library Association (ALA) for the most distinguished American Children’s book written during the previous year. This award was the first children’s book award in the world. While only one book is selected as the Newbery Award winner, each year several other books are recognized and receive Honor Award status. On Monday, the ALA announced its 2017 winners.
