Kindergartners visited the library this week to learn about this fun space and to prepare for the privilege of checking out books and other material. Lead Librarian Ashleigh Finn talked to students about what the library is, who uses it, how to find appropriate books and why it is important to return books on time. She also discussed the difference between fiction and nonfiction, the parts of a book and proper handling of books.

“Kindergarten is the first year that students can take library book home with them,” Ashleigh says. “They’re very excited and they seem most interested in nonfiction. We created picture labels for the shelves to help kindergartners find popular topics like animals and sports.”
To prepare for next week’s library class, when kindergartners can begin taking books home, students decorated their library cards and took photos for identification. Their next class will include a library scavenger hunt and the chance to select up to two books each for check out. Library books can be checked in and out during normal library hours (see below) and during library class.
Did you know? Parent volunteers are an essential part of running a school library. If you are interested in serving in the library, contact Kalliope Balafas or Michele Steed.
Please note: The library is moving to the Corkins Center in October.
