Mrs. Davis is a learning detective; part of her job is solving the mystery of how a child learns best and developing strategies that will best support their success. Her fondest childhood memories are spending time on and in the water at Kootenay Lake near her hometown in British Columbia.
Impacting Students
I enjoy teaching children reading strategies because it is all encompassing. In order to understand and make connections to text, students need to know the importance of pausing, thinking, questioning, and reflecting on what they are reading. They need to use the phonics skills they have learned to break down unknown words, recognize sight words, and respond accurately to punctuation. It is such a joy to watch a child make connections after figuring out a word or an expression. This process builds self-confidence, grit and joy!
Lifelong Learner
Every professional development opportunity supports my work with students. I attended a conference that provided a different way to teach writing to my struggling students. When I returned to Graland, I was able to directly apply what I learned. I blended the new strategies with what I was already doing and it worked! The students responded positively and the success was evident in their writing.
Favorite Teaching Moment
My favorite moments are when I learn that a child I have worked with, has been successful, and made instrumental gains in the classroom environment. Watching these children succeed in the classroom demonstrates the success of a team working together.
Professional Passion
I love teaching children to read. I love watching children develop confidence, ownership, and pride. I also enjoy the mystery of my job which includes figuring who these children are and how each one of them learns.
Book I Can Read Over and Over
A favorite book of mine is 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White. Of all things that are important in life, we all need thoughtful and loving friends. As a parent and an educator I believe that we need to teach children to trust and believe in the power of friendship; many children need to taught how to be a friend and learn how to navigate tricky relationships.
