Class of
2023

Marti Champion, Head of Middle School

As I was preparing my final remarks for you, the Class of 2023, I thought about each one of you individually, and then I thought about the collective. Your middle school journey has been punctuated by self-discovery, personal growth and the relationships that were built along the way. And it’s the relationships you’ve built with your classmates and teachers that brought to mind one of my favorite proverbs. It’s a Mexican proverb that says, “Tell me who you walk with, and I’ll tell you who you are.”

Tell me who you walk with, and I’ll tell you who you are. Take a moment to think about that. Tell me who you walk with, and I’ll tell you who you are. Who are the people you spend the most time with? Who are your closest friends? What has walking with them looked like? With your permission, I’d like to tell you what I saw.
Sometimes, it looked like walking ahead, out in front, taking the lead. You had the confidence to be the first to try something new or clear the path to ensure it was safe for others to follow. You had the confidence to strike your own path and walk to the beat of your own drum. And, you could do this because you were surrounded by friends and teachers who were invested in your success. Sometimes, it looked like walking a few paces behind. You were there to provide the extra nudge that was needed to keep going and take that extra step. You remembered what it felt like to be surrounded by friends and teachers who were invested in your success, and you wanted to do the same for another. And sometimes, it simply meant walking side by side, sharing in the ups and downs of middle school life. And, yes, there were ups and downs. You were there for each other with the applause and hi-fives or the hugs and Kleenex. You were there. You were the one whose motivation, ambition, and focus buoyed one another just when it was needed.

As you leave this place called Graland Country Day School, be mindful of the company you keep. In high school, you will meet people from different backgrounds, with diverse perspectives and varying levels of wisdom and experiences. Engage. Make sure you surround yourself with people who embody the qualities you aspire to possess. Choose friends who will challenge you, uplift you and inspire you to become the best version of yourself. Seek mentors who will guide you, like Jacky B., friends who will inspire you, like our award winners, and companions who will support you in high school. To be clear, if you choose people who embody the qualities of the classmate sitting next to you at this moment, you’ll be fine. Tell me who you walk with and I will tell you who you are.

Now, I will say what have become my parting words to each graduating class. Sawubona (sah-woo-bone-ah). I see you. I see your personality. I see your humanity. I see your dignity. As an educator, I am in the precious position of working with young people who possess many unique qualities, needs and dreams. I see you. I see you as a complex young person trying to find their way as a student, friend and family member. You are enough and you have so much to offer those whose paths you’ll cross in your lifetime. I see you.

Here’s to a good summer and a whole new adventure called high school. I believe in each one of you, and I look forward to hearing about the amazing young people you become. Good luck.
