VIDEO: Seventh Graders Build Bridges Between Generations With Memory Boxes

Grade 7 students recently created memory boxes to honor a senior in their life as part of their service-learning project on intergenerational connections.
In English, they interviewed their honorees and wrote biographies to celebrate their lives. In history, they explored oral histories and how personal stories connect to historical events. In science, they studied memory formation and the impact of conditions like dementia. In math, they applied measurement and geometry skills to design and build their memory boxes as 3D creations.

The seventh graders built their memory boxes in the Gates Invention and Innovation Lab, utilizing tools and woodworking equipment to bring their ideas to life. Through this project, students applied skills learned in MESH courses while gaining a deeper appreciation for the value of preserving memories, building connections, and honoring other generations.

A new element of the project this year was the design of a memory box by each advisory for their senior citizen buddy through an enhanced partnership with A Little Help. Each A Little Help honoree was also invited to campus for the memory box event, where they celebrated alongside Grade 7 students, teachers, and parents.
