Serving With Heart: The Grade 6 Service Club Food Drive

From March 4-6, Graland's Grade 6 Service Club, in partnership with the GPA, hosted a food drive benefiting Jewish Family Services (JFS) and Capitol Hill Community Services. Graland families generously donated canned goods and non-perishables during morning carline to support these organizations, which the sixth graders have been volunteering with regularly throughout the year.
This food drive is just one part of the students' year-long study of poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity. In addition to volunteering once a week at JFS, where they stock food pantry shelves, and at Capitol Hill Community Services, where they serve meals at the soup kitchen, sixth graders have participated in several service projects, including creating toiletry kits and cards for veterans experiencing homelessness as part of their Veterans Day initiative. Throughout the year, students have connected their service learning to classroom activities, such as a "Game of Life" budgeting project in math and studying food insecurity in science. On March 7, they had the opportunity to present their efforts at the GPA meeting.

These ongoing service projects are leading up to the Empty Bowls event on April 17. At this event, the ceramic bowls created by students in art class will be on display to symbolize the impact of poverty and food insecurity. Students will also share the insights they've gained throughout the year with their families and educators.
Thank you to all the Grade 6 students, teachers, and parent volunteers for working together to make a meaningful impact in the Denver community.
