Kindergarten: A New Field Trip for National Poetry Month

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Graland kindergarteners embarked on a new field trip to the Botanic Gardens to get inspired for their unit on poetry! The unit is part of a series of writing workshops that take place in Kindergarten throughout the year.
Through the writing workshops, students gain exposure to various types of writing, including poetry and its various forms (free verse, acrostic, bio, fill-in-the-blank poetry, etc.). During the tour of the gardens, the kindergarteners were encouraged to use their senses to observe their surroundings, take notes, and draw pictures of their findings in their journals. Using this information, students got to write a poem about their field trip in the style of their choice.

In addition to the field trip, the kindergartners showcased their creativity by utilizing a poetry-themed activity center that the Graland librarians curated this month in the makerspace. The center, a hub of inspiration, included a community poetry wall, magnetic poetry tiles, poem starters, a special book display, and more. This center sparked a wave of creativity in the kindergartners, leading them to write even more poems. These poems were combined into a poetry book that the students were eager to share at their Poetry Cafe event with family and friends this April. Keep up the great work, Kindergarten poets!
