Grade 1: Studying Alma Thomas - Artist, Teacher, and Prominent Painter

In art class this month with Ms. Baldwin, first graders learned about Alma Thomas (artist, teacher, and prominent American painter of the 20th century) and color mixing.
During this lesson, students were provided primary colors and learned how to mix them to create secondary and tertiary colors. Eventually, students used this new skillset to create an Alma Thomas-inspired piece (see photos!). In addition, first graders made learning posters to teach someone else about Alma Thomas. Students included facts about her career and artwork, including that she was the first black woman to have a painting in the White House and that she painted with bright colors and thick brushstrokes nicknamed 'Alma Stripes.' Beautiful work, Grade 1 artists!
